The perennial and eternal source of energy has a vital role in the socio-economic development of the Country. WEST BENGAL GREEN ENERGY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION LIMITED (WBGEDCL) has been created by Govt. of West Bengal, to promote different grid connected renewable energy based power projects through PPP mode and also to ensure investment of private sector in Renewable Energy. WBGEDCL a joint venture company of West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL), West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) and West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) on equity sharing of 45:35:20 basis.

The main objective of the company is to encourage more investments from private sectors to generate green energy which also reduces emission of Green House Gases. To quote the Memorandum of Association of WBGEDCL the objective of the organization is “to promote investment in Grid connected Renewable Energy projects and various Green Energy sources and to develop and execute special renewable energy projects on commercial and/demonstration basis”.
